The most important thing in planning a road trip is knowing how much time you have obviously. But the trick is figuring out how far you can drive everyday comfortably. I typically start with a 24 hour drive to get to a point to start my trip. Living on the east coast, everything I want to see is in the Rockies and west. Most people would never do that. Most trips in the east can be accomplished with 4 to 6 hours of driving a day. Out west that can increase substantially. So... figure out how long you can stand being in the car.
